Participatory monitoring and evaluation are essential components of project design and implementation. SHE has conducted several evaluations of infrastructure projects in water and sanitation and waste management in India, Senegal and South Africa as well as projects on toxics reduction in Canada and France and nutritional planning in Bangladesh. More recently a course evaluation of a Reproductive Health and Environment module in Egypt funded by WHO was conducted.
An Eco-system approach to health was used as a framework for each evaluation which included socio-economic, cultural, enviornmental, health and political factors to understand the complex nature under which projects were conducted. This helped provide pertinent recommendations. These evaluations required a holistic analysis which incorporated both qualitative methods of inquiry and quantitative analysis.
For the South Riverdale Community Health Centre in Toronto, Canada a detailed monitoring and evaluation framework was implemented to track and understand behaviour change related to a number of tools and methods that were used to address child health and the environment.
